What is a Rack Cabinet?

A Rack Cabinet (Server Rack) is a cabinet used to house IT-related equipment so that devices can operate continuously. Height is measured in units called U (Rack Unit), where 1U equals 1.75 inches, allowing equipment from multiple manufacturers to be installed together with a perfect fit. The internal width follows the international standard of 19 inches, which helps save space and also prevents access by unauthorized personnel.

What is a 19-inch Rack, and Why 19 Inches?

A 19-inch Rack is an international standard steel structure designed to house IT equipment such as servers and networking devices vertically. The number “19 inches” refers to the width of the device’s front panel measured from the left mounting ear to the right, following the EIA-310 standard, which allows equipment from different brands to be installed together systematically.

Why Must Rack Cabinets Be 19 Inches Wide?

The origin of this number dates back to the early 20th century, beginning with the standard set by Western Electric, which used it for installing railway signaling equipment and telephone switchboards. This was because it represented the most balanced size between “available space” and “human ergonomics”, allowing convenient access for maintenance. Later, the radio and audio industries adopted this standard, until it officially became a global standard in 1943. Even as technology has advanced tremendously, the 19-inch standard is still used worldwide because of:

  • Interoperability: Equipment from all brands can be used together immediately
  • Airflow Management: Designed for maximum heat dissipation efficiency
  • Scalability: Makes expanding data center systems easy while saving space

What Equipment Is Used with a Rack Cabinet?

Key equipment commonly installed inside a Server Rack Cabinet includes:

  1. Servers: Covering both Rackmount and Blade Servers
  2. Network systems: Including Network Switches and Routers, which form the core of connectivity
  3. Backup power systems: UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) for protecting data and preventing work disruptions
  4. Power distribution rails for rack cabinets: Also known as PDU, which distributes electrical current from the UPS to various devices inside the cabinet. Available in both standard and Intelligent PDU versions, the latter capable of monitoring power usage and remotely rebooting devices over the network
  5. Storage systems: Such as NAS and SAN, for preserving an organization’s important data
  6. Security equipment: Such as Firewalls and NVR/DVR recorders for CCTV cameras
  7. Patch Panels: Used to manage and organize large numbers of LAN cables neatly

FAQs About Rack Cabinet

A: A Rack Cabinet is designed according to international standards, specifically built to accommodate IT equipment, and helps manage systems efficiently.

A: For large-scale systems, it is recommended to have the installation done by a professional technician to ensure maximum safety and efficiency.

A: The differences lie in

  1. Steel thickness, which affects load-bearing capacity and the tendency for the cabinet to “wobble”
  2. Paint quality (Powder Coating) that protects against rust and scratches — KJL rack cabinets have passed the Salt Spray Test for up to 240 hours
  3. Cable management standards, designed to make cable organization easier

A: In addition to counting your current number of devices, you should reserve at least an additional 20-30% of space for future expansion, and leave a 1U gap between devices that generate high heat to ensure good ventilation.
